Design as a solution in times of change

Design as a solution in times of change

NOVEMBER 2020 | 2 minutes

There is hardly any doubt that design is innovation. Innovation in terms of uses, materials and technologies applied to everyday objects. Design as an instrument of change and a solution in times of transformation. In particular, in terms of the comfort and well-being of the user in his/her day-to-day life.

Design offers answers and solutions. Beyond aesthetics and functionality, design must serve people and respect the environment. The designed object is the result of intensive work in innovation, ideas and experiences, which are brought together in the Design Thinking concept.

When it comes to everyday objects, when that design endures over time, it becomes a collective imagination, a reference to an era. This quality of design encompasses all industries and all sectors, including the work furniture industry, whether for the home, the office or collective environments.

The home and the things housed there have taken on greater importance in recent months as a result of increased time spent at home. The spaces where moments have been shared and where remote working has taken place have become the main focus, hence the need to ensure that they meet criteria of functionality and comfort. Once again, faced with a paradigm shift such as the current one, design serves to inspire, contribute and provide ergonomics during times of rest and work at home.

In fact, equipping work paces must also respond to a constant search for improvement, whether in the office, in a co-working environment or in a domestic setting, which is becoming increasingly important in the day-to-day running of many companies. Being able to work from anywhere with the same conditions of comfort is of the utmost importance when it comes to productivity.

Actiu´s furniture is designed to provide the user with well-being, taking in everything from the design, materials and how it is manufactured. The brand´s commitment to design for decades earned it the National Design Award in 2017 and is the origin of some of its most representative pieces of furniture, which have now been included in the exhibition "Valencian design (2009 - 2019) Products for a global world".

Organised by the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM), at its headquarters in Alcoy (Alicante), the exhibition brings together 175 pieces from around 70 studios and 90 companies. The TNK Flex, Trim, Talent, Noom 50 and Noom collections, designed by Marcelo Alegre, are on display at the exhibition, as well as Javier Cuñado´s Karbon by ITEMDesignworks and Wing by Ramos & Bassols.

Pieces whose designers and manufacturers see design as a commitment to the present and the future, which provide differential qualities and which are constantly striving for improvements in technology and in the quality of life of their users. Designers who are becoming increasingly necessary in companies, due to their vision, creativity and capacity for reinvention. Their collaboration with people who have the experience and knowledge to deal with changes is what ensures design is a tool with a bright future.
