Actiu Technology Park staircases, a differentiating architectural element

OCTOBER 2013 | 3 minutes

World Architecture Day took place on 7 October and during this time many cities around the world organised weeks full of activities related to architecture. To commemorate this important event and by sharing the commitment of Actiu towards architecture, we would like to invite you to get to know two architectural elements differentiating its Technology Park: its two staircases.

The first of these is found at the corporate building entrance at Actiu Technology Park. This building is inspired by a basic principle: to achieve the best environment for work. For this, the building presents open, light and comfort but also design, efficiency and functionality, three qualities that Actiu prints on all its products.

The staircase located in the hall of the corporate building is the first major exhibition of design and functionality that we find. This gateway gives us access to the first floor of the offices of the company. In this, the architect of the park, José María Tomás Llavador, wanted to exemplify the architectural proposal that Actiu Technology Park in its entirety:  risk, innovation and avant-garde. This staircase of broken lines, almost impossible and very clean is a round facility. A piece that meets and fills space, which welcomes visitors and guides. The prelude to the large interior space that accentuates the company's ongoing effort for design and excellence.

However, it is in the centre of the offices, the heart of the building, where we find the philosophy of the company in its architectural landmark: the spiral staircase, designed in collaboration between the architect José María Tomás Llavador and the designer and interior designer José Cosín. As in Actiu, this staircase is motion, dynamism and functionality. An architectural piece without support that acts as the core of communication between the three floors. In its simple elegance, this staircase has three functions: it connects space, decoration and structure.

An example of thoroughness and attention to detail. But also sustainability, a fundamental part of Actiu DNA and in which we find in each of its actions: the buildings, the product processes, the products, raw materials and the minds of its people. For just as the Technology Park is created to have self sufficiency of its natural resources such as water and energy, this staircase was designed with the most innovative manufacturing techniques to enable its decomposition of  different steel modules. Modules that were assembled and welded in situ, which optimised their transport and reduced any work incidences.

This staircase is found in the corporate building of the company, one of the seven buildings that make up Actiu Technology Park, a sustainable, industrial project certified by LEED Gold, awarded by the U.S. entity Green Building Council and that has turned Actiu into the first industrial company in its sector in Europe to receive this certification. This Technology Park, designed by José María Tomás Llavador, exemplifies the possibility of the existence of a model designed to be the corporate building beyond functionality, creating an environment in which values such as efficiency, versatility and sustainability come together with the return of tradition in the use of materials and optimisation of resources. It is also a park where all the details are taken care of and respond to the values of the company: the attachment to the land, sustainability, the importance of design and functionality.
