The "Invisible" Power of Art: ARCO 2020

MARCH 2020 | 3 minutes

If years ago, art started making its way out of museums and galleries to invade our homes and leisure spaces, such as hotels and restaurants, it's now doing the same in working environments, demonstrating the immense power it has over the moods and emotions of those who observe it.

Playing a fundamental role in cognitive and emotional well-being due to its direct relationship with the generation of dopamine in the brain, art has already become an essential ally in many spaces, to which it is able to add soul and customisation. The gap that traditionally separated this discipline from design, interior design or architecture has been diluted, and just as it's possible to transform environments and improve the lives of their inhabitants through furniture, lighting or the relationship with nature, it is also possible to do so through art.

Included within the MIND concept of the WELL v2 Certification, art has already become one of the main tools used in workspaces to improve the mood, mental health and well-being of their inhabitants. Aware of its influence on the creativity and productivity of workers, regardless of the sector, many companies are committed to democratising an art that, until recently, was reserved only for management areas. In meeting rooms, spaces for socialisation, workstations or areas for concentration, art helps to break with the traditional office archetype, where until recently it was considered to be an "element of distraction", now inspiring a new, creative and innovative way of thinking.

VIP ROOM

Both in its most traditional form, through paintings, sculptures or prints, as well as in other more innovative and dynamic forms that include murals, installations, or art in a digital format, it clearly offers the company and its workers multiple benefits. Not only because it creates a more welcoming and attractive environment, improving creativity and productivity, but also because it helps to communicate the brand image and the values of the company

Regarding the emotions and reactions that art awakens in its viewers,  ArcoMADRID knows a whole lot about this. With 30 participating countries, the annual Contemporary Art Fair has once again brought together artists, galleries, collectors, invited professionals and the general public, in an edition based on the concept It’s Just A Matter of Time as the central theme. Through proposals from both emerging and consolidated artists, the fair has offered participants the opportunity to get an up-close look and to have a dialogue with a type of art that is becoming increasingly present in our day-to-day lives.

Designed by Italian architect and interior designer Teresa Sapey and architect Rafael Robledo, and with the collaboration of RED (Meeting of Spanish Design Companies), this year's VIP Room has brought together the best of Spanish design with the presence of companies such as Actiu, Akaba, Cármenes, Diabla, Enea, Equipo DRT, Estiluz, Inclass, Joquer, Kriskadecor, LZF Lamps, Nerinea, Ondarreta, Miliken, Luxiona, Finsa or Valentine.

Conceived as a great chromatic performance where it is possible to escape from the hustle and bustle of the fair for just a few moments, the VIP Room has been transformed into a work of art that, in the words of Teresa Sapey herself, has allowed guests to “live in art and not only with art”. Above a contemporary, abstract and colourful painting as a backdrop, visitors have been able to experience first-hand the cultural transformation that workspaces have been subjected to in recent years. Places that go far beyond the traditional office, where creativity, collaboration, innovation, transformative conversions or even moments of rest are the main protagonists.

Actiu's philosophy of connecting people while remaining environmentally conscious has materialised in a large, multicoloured table that is 22 metres long, where you can have coffee, work alone, have lunch or hold a meeting. Built from the Longo range, 100% recyclable and manufactured with anti-fingerprint and zero-formaldehyde boards, its different shades of green make reference to the concept of biophilia and the relationship with nature, in addition to Actiu's commitment to sustainability and wellness. The Karbon chair, an iconic piece made of carbon fibre that won the Red Dot Product Design Award 2019, the Bend modular soft seating system and the entire Noom collection, with the new Noom 50 chair included, have been Actiu's other contributions to a VIP Room that in this edition has played with RED's motto this year: "Colour".
