Fluit, the 100% sustainable chair, wins an If Design Award

MAY 2023 | 3 minutes

Fluit is Actiu's first 100% sustainable chair. A piece inspired in the sea in which Actiu and the Italian studio Archirivolto Design have joined forces to promote design and comfort while prioritising sustainability at all times.

A union that has been recognised with an If Design Award in the Product category for Retail & Public spaces, one of the most prestigious prizes in the world and awarded by the If Design Foundation. A recognition among more than 11,000 products from 56 different countries around the world.

Fluit is inspired by a 16th century Dutch sailing ship named Fluyt, larger than the merchant ships of the time with a fluid architecture that, thanks to technology, provides lightness, aesthetics and stability. The material used to make it was in turn derived from goods traffic, from the plastic waste from the boxes used.

Under a total concept of zero kilometre and sustainable production, this chair is born with the aim of having as little impact as possible on the planet.

"Fluit is synonymous with fluidity in design and form; it is an eco-designed chair. Its shapes allow it to be manufactured with a minimum use of material, which is distributed homogeneously and optimally. This material comes from plastic waste from local farmers' crates. A unique chair on the market, whose architecture and design blend into any environment. A tractor project that has taken us one step further in innovation and sustainability", explains Soledat Berbegal, spokesperson and brand director of Actiu.

"The dimensions of the ship Fluyt, after which it is named, were those of the most robust warships of the time..."

"...The Fluit design is thus born of the sea, a Mediterranean sea that is part of our culture, Italian, Spanish and European. A culture that also shares a common concept of preserving the planet and changing the way we look at how we produce new products. A sinuous and static object, without any flat surface, which seems to start a movement. In the same way, the sea, even when it is calm, is not still", say Archirivolto Design.

Fluit was thus conceived as a transversal piece, capable of mimicking all environments: hospitality, work and training.

Designer Christian Gori emphasises: "It's a product that starts from a simple concept and is made with a raw material that we all know, but from a completely new point of view", he underlined.

"It was essential that it should not follow a fashion, but be ahead of the curve and be timeless, capable of fitting into all kinds of hybrid spaces, from the home to the office, from restaurants to conference rooms", emphasises designer Matilde Sessolo.

Fluit is a sustainable chair created entirely from recycled materials, specifically polypropylene and 30% fibreglass, and is in line with Actiu's philosophy of sustainability and circular economy. All its materials are certified by GreenWorld Compounding and, in the case of plastic, they are post-consumer materials from the agri-food sector.

Its shapes allow for a minimum use of material in its manufacture, which is distributed homogeneously and optimally. Manufacture is carried out by gas injection, an innovative industrial process that reinforces resistance and provides a delicate finish that is soft to the touch.

Fluit is a driving project that has taken Actiu a step forward in terms of innovation and sustainability.
