Healthy Remote Working With Ergonomic Furniture

JULY 2020 | 2 minutes

Working from home is here to stay. After several months in which working remotely was the best option for businesses, working from home has now become a supplement to in-person work. That is why it is important to equip Home Offices with furniture that meets the strict European Union quality requirements.

The Director of Innovation at the Biomechanics Institute of Valencia (IBV), Rosa Porcar, explains that the Home Office "as a regular workspace must meet all requirements and implications related to occupational hazards." The furniture we use for working has a direct influence on the health of workers, so it is a very important factor to take into account.

The key issue when setting up a Home Office is choosing the right chairs and desks, but other factors such as lighting, ventilation, ambient conditions, active breaks and task shifting must also be taken into account. "If we do not approach it in this way, there will be mental and physical consequences. And this is something that's not in the interest of employees, companies or society. It's a lose-lose situation", highlights Porcar.

The remote workspaces used by company employees must comply with the same health and safety regulations as their workstation in the office. Nevertheless, Rosa Porcar points out that the difference between choosing a chair for the office or for home is that “when it comes to the workspace, the company opts for a range of chairs that must be capable of adjusting to people of different heights, weights and characteristics. But in the case of the Home Office, it's likely that only one or two people will use the chair, so it must fit very specific users."

The products that furnish the Home Office must be sufficiently adjustable to be able to adapt to a wide variety of anthropometric measurements, they must be shock-resistant and able to withstand intensive use over a long period of time. Among other qualities, they shouldn't have sharp edges or corners and be stable enough so as not to tip over.

Actiu's furniture adheres to the UNE-EN 1335 standard for task seating and the UNE-EN 527 standard for office desks, the two standards for the office furniture sector in Europe. In addition, other products that complement the company's range of furnishing solutions also comply with standards such as UNE-EN 15372 and UNE-EN 16139.

Chairs, such as the TNK Flex model, are renowned for their ergonomic qualities and their ability to protect people's back and posture; or in the case of the Stay and Trim, to provide comfort and different functionalities for day-to-day work. Furthermore, Actiu's height-adjustable desks can also be adapted to the movement of the body and to each specific task. Height-adjustable models such as the Mobility and Talent are wonderful options for an efficient, comfortable and safe Home Office.
