Heathrow Airport
May 2010 | 2 minutes

Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, Terminal 5 at BAA, with an investment of 6100 million euros ( 4300 million pounds sterling), is the most significante milestone at Heathrow airport, the busiest International airport  in the world. The terminal, with a capacity for 35 million passengers per year, has become the first access path to the United Kingdom and has enabled, for the first time since 1984, to redefine passenger traffic at the airport.

Actiu has equipped the offices at the new Terminal T5 which consists of three main buildings: the main terminal building and two satellites: Terminal 5B and 5C. Its design combines functionality of a modern airport with the greatest comfort possible for passengers, with a minimum environmental impact, easy maintenance and a world class architecture.

The offices have been furnished with double desks from the Vital program. This is a product that has the capacity to grow and with easy reconfiguration, depending on the needs. For this project the melamine finish was chosen, with great durability and 100 % recyclable, in white and aluminized legs.

Each workstation is limited by a table top divider placed at the front part and upholstered in fabric. The gaps provide visual and functional benefits required for maintaining the privacy of each operational area but without being closed in.

Sustainability is a key part to the project of Terminal 5. The residual heat from the power plant is used to satisfy 85% of the heat demand, with a saving of 11.000 tons of CO2 per year. Furthermore, it has incorporated  Intelligent technology to the light points, which modifies the required level as needed, to the escalators and to the luggage systems which adjust their speed according to its use.

In addition to the buildings of the main terminal, the project includes 60 positions for new planes, an underground station, a multi-storey car park of 3800 m2, a new closer access to the motorway and 13 kilometres of tunnels. The construction of a new traffic control tower is also planned.
