ABB Headquarters: Innovation, Technology, and Well-Being at the Service of People

Offices

Objective

The Swedish-Swiss company ABB (Asea Brown Boveri), which specializes in industrial electrification and automation, needed to completely transform its offices located on the third floor of the Dublin Building in Madrid. The new space was to become an environment where innovation, technology, and people coexisted in harmony, and which would support a work style based primarily on collaboration and teamwork.

The result is a vibrant workplace ecosystem, designed to stand the test of time and foster talent, featuring open, multifunctional spaces that promote flexibility and let in natural light, as well as informal collaboration areas.

Solution

To achieve a precise balance between operational functionality and brand identity, without losing sight of employee well-being, the project adopts a neutral, contemporary, and timeless design language, where architecture serves the people. The design priority has been clear: to ensure a fluid visual continuity between spaces, maximize natural light, ensure optimal acoustic comfort, and connect the interior and exterior by taking advantage of strategic views of the park.

The neutrality of the overall design is deliberately interrupted at strategic points, infusing the office with character and dynamism. The workcafé stands out with a more informal and relaxed atmosphere, where the park’s greenery serves as a backdrop that invites rest and interaction, and various seating options—such as the Bee chairs, the Noom 40 stools, or the Globb soft seating —encourage diverse forms of interaction. With a waiting area adorned in the brand’s colors, featuring comfortable Globb sofas and the ABB logo on a backlit panel, the reception area welcomes visitors with a more high-tech and corporate aesthetic; and the library is conceived as a haven of calm, offering the ideal atmosphere for concentration and unwinding.

Designed for agility and adaptability, the offices accommodate 156 workstations, which are not rigidly structured but rather integrated into 8 collaborative, flexible, and configurable areas that allow employees to work either seated —in A+S Work chairs with height-adjustable Mobility desks—or standing—on Efit stools —ensuring employees’ ergonomic well-being. Alongside these, 20 meeting rooms of various sizes, equipped with Twist modular tables, streamline decision-making; while the multipurpose auditorium—which can be divided into two separate rooms—can host everything from training sessions to large corporate events.
