Education

Target

Excelia, the French higher education group founded in 1988 and headquartered in La Rochelle, has inaugurated a new campus in the Deux-Lions district of Tours. A sustainable and locally rooted educational environment, which was to reflect Excelia's CSR approach and commitment to eco-responsible education, and which its managers have entrusted to the local studio MU Architecture and the Kardham Group.

Conceived and designed for maximum adaptability, the building that now houses a university could be converted into an office or residential block.

Solution

Designed by MU Architecture, the new Excelia centre in Tours integrates student life with that of the neighbourhood, through large glass façades that open up the common areas on the ground floor to the surroundings and link education and the city. With classrooms, a media library, offices, social and work spaces on the upper floors, and a rooftop garden, the building is conceived and designed for maximum adaptability, with circulation and services in a central concrete core that allows complete freedom to reimagine a new layout. Sustainable and local materials, such as Chinon wood for the structure and Anjou straw for the façade, reinforce the group's commitment to a bioclimatic and sustainable approach.

The Kardham Group has worked alongside the architects, present in all phases of the project through change management actions that have helped the users to adapt to their new working and learning environment, as well as in the design of the interior layout and selection of the most suitable furniture for the educational, collaborative and social spaces.

Among the selected firms, Actiu has participated, together with its partner Marcireau, with the stands and poufs from the Agile Collection, which boost creativity and facilitate the reorganisation of the space according to the activity. Tabula tables and modular cupboards have also been used, but the real stars of the show are the Qyos acoustic booths, where students and teachers can concentrate, make calls without being disturbed or meet to work in small groups.
