Norwegian Cruise Line improves the traveller experience

Cruises

Target

The Port of Miami, the “cruise capital of the world”, needed to expand its facilities to accommodate the growing influx of passengers from Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL), which has commissioned Miami-based Bermello Ajamil & Partners to design its new Terminal B.

The terminal had to meet very demanding sustainability standards, optimising energy efficiency, indoor air quality and the efficient use of water, materials and local human resources; ensuring wildlife protection and reducing pollution. In addition to enabling faster and more efficient boarding and disembarking processes, security checks and check-in, thus improving the passenger experience.

Designed and built from a sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach, the Miami 'Pearl' is the world's first LEED Gold v4 certified cruise terminal.

Solution

Design, innovation and sustainability come together in Terminal B, dubbed the 'Pearl' of Miami and inspired by the design of a nautilus shell, with a spiral façade that opens onto the ocean.

With a surface area of 166,500 m2 and capacity for cruise ships with more than 5,000 passengers, the new terminal surprises with an impressive hall more than 11 storeys high, which recreates the lobby of a ship and which Actiu, together with its North American partner Masof, has equipped with its Avant benches.

The smooth finish of the steel columns and aluminium panels is reminiscent of the surface of a pearl, and the carpet in blue tones recreates a cosy oceanic atmosphere on which the benches are distributed like small living organisms. Its smooth, ergonomic lines ensure comfort while waiting, and its design, with wooden seats and backrests and no arms or side tables, enhances the connection with nature and the traveller's well-being.
