Markham College Primary School, a learning landscape

Education

Objective

Following the global COVID-19 pandemic, which brought the entire planet to a standstill in 2020, the Peruvian bilingual international school, Markham College, developed a flexible educational model for its primary school, focused on sustainability and outdoor learning. A versatile and changing system, ‘pandemic-proof’, which broke away from the traditional classroom structure and placed nature and ventilation at the heart of the learning experience.

Flexible layouts, mobile and folding elements, courtyards and outdoor spaces connect learning with nature and sustainable thinking.

Solution

Designed by Rosan Bosch Studio, which develops projects for change and new models of living and working from Copenhagen, the new primary school is conceived as a "learning landscape", prepared for any possible unforeseen event and minimising health risks. A multi-purpose and connected environment, which, in order to encourage change and the movement of pupils through the different areas, is distributed throughout a three-storey building around a large green space. Balconies, vertical gardens, a learning bridge and several courtyards blur boundaries with the environment and allow for outdoor education.

The Peruvian landscape and its river Hablador define a project of fluid circulations that encourages interaction, creativity and debate, in which Actiu has participated, together with its partner Decorlux, equipping some of its spaces. Whas and Noom seating programmes -in chair, stool or soft seating versions, and in striking colours- and Bend poufs in striking colours encourage communication and collaboration in the classrooms and learning rooms; and the Talent programme's elevating, mobile and folding tables improve ergonomics by promoting postural change. The office is filled with Tabula tables and organic Bee chairs, again reminiscent of the natural environment; and in more sober, neutral tones, the offices combine minimalist Prisma tables with the versatile and always adaptable Urban chairs.
