Designing to learn: the university of the future equips itself with Actiu

Education

UDIT Madrid

In the spaces of UDIT, the University of Design, Innovation and Technology of Madrid, project-based learning comes to life thanks to a flexible, ergonomic and contemporary environment that has been equipped by Actiu over the years, with the aim of enhancing its disruptive educational model.

Today, more than 3,000 students of 30 different nationalities study at its three campuses. Its growth has been such that, in addition to being awarded a Special Mention of the National Innovation and Design Award in 2019, this year it received the Education and Training Award at the Madrid Open Cities Awards, in recognition of the institution's innovative educational model.

UDIT occupies more than 21,000 m2 distributed between the Design and Creative Industries Campus (Avda. Alfonso XIII, 97-99 and C/ Colombia, 44) and the Technology, Innovation and Applied Sciences Campus (C/ Alcalá, 506). In addition, the building at C/Colombia 44 of the Design and Creative Industries Campus has recently won an award at the Architecture Madrid Awards 2024.

Target

Designing educational spaces that respond to new teaching models is the main challenge faced by UDIT in each new extension of its facilities: three atypical campuses that have made furniture their best ally for a different approach. Its pedagogical approach, based on active learning, collaborative work and applied creativity, requires a profound transformation in the way classrooms and common areas are conceived. It is no longer enough to offer functional furniture: environments must adapt to changing methodologies, withstand intensive use and promote student well-being.

UDIT has been a pioneer in the incorporation of new technological tools and methodologies based on "learning by doing" and emerging disciplines such as digital prototyping. In its educational approach, the role of the teacher is transformed into that of a mentor: someone who guides, challenges and accompanies students in their development. It is the student who is at the centre of the educational process, building knowledge through experience, trial and error. For all this to happen, it is essential to have a physical environment that allows it: agile, transformable and well-equipped spaces.

UDIT's expansion, together with its focus on technology and specialisation, has consolidated the need to create versatile, ergonomic and sustainable spaces, in line with its training philosophy. The furniture has become a pedagogical tool at the service of talent, capable of transforming the educational experience from within and accompanying the growth of a benchmark institution.

UDIT occupies more than 21,000 m2 spread over the Design and Creative Industries Campus and the Technology, Innovation and Applied Sciences Campus.

Solution

Actiu is UDIT's strategic partner in responding to this challenge. Through versatile, ergonomic and environmentally friendly furnishing solutions, the Alicante-based firm provides the three university campuses with furniture capable of adapting to the dynamism of each space. From classrooms that can be easily rearranged to common areas that stimulate informal exchange, through laboratories, libraries or project rooms, each environment is designed to accompany the different ways of learning, creating and sharing.

The use of recyclable materials, highly resistant upholstery, careful acoustics and easy maintenance guarantee durability and functionality. The collaboration between the two entities has resulted in exemplary projects such as the Chillida Classroom, designed by the students themselves. At UDIT, Actiu furniture not only occupies the space, it transforms it. And, with it, it also transforms the way in which learning takes place and the future is built.
