ABB Headquarters: innovation, technology and wellbeing at the service of people

Offices

Objective

The Swedish-Swiss company ABB (Asea Brown Boveri), which specialises in electrification and industrial automation, needed to completely transform its offices on the third floor of the Dublín building in Madrid. The new space was to become an environment where innovation, technology and people coexisted in harmony, and which would support a way of working based primarily on collaboration and teamwork.

The result is a vibrant workplace ecosystem, designed to stand the test of time and nurture talent, with open-plan, multi-functional spaces that promote flexibility and maximise natural light, as well as informal collaboration areas.

Solution

To strike a precise balance between operational functionality and brand identity, whilst keeping the well-being of staff in mind, the project adopts a neutral, contemporary and timeless design language, in which the architecture serves the people. The design priority has been clear: to ensure a fluid visual continuity between spaces, maximise the influx of natural light, ensure optimal acoustic comfort, and connect the interior and exterior by making the most of the strategic views of the park.

The overall neutrality of the design is deliberately broken at strategic points, infusing the office with character and dynamism. The workcafé stands out with a more informal and relaxed atmosphere, where the park’s green landscape serves as a backdrop that invites rest and interaction, and a variety of seating options – such as the Bee chairs, the Noom 40 stools or the Globb soft seating – encourage different forms of interaction. With a waiting area decked out in the brand’s colours, featuring comfortable Globb sofas and the ABB logo on a backlit panel, the reception area welcomes visitors with a more high-tech and corporate aesthetic; and the library is designed as a haven of calm, offering the ideal atmosphere for concentration and unwinding.

Designed for agility and adaptability, the offices accommodate 156 workstations, which are not rigidly structured but are organised into eight collaborative, flexible and configurable areas, allowing staff to work either seated –in A+S Work chairs with height-adjustable Mobility desks– or standing –on Efit stools–, ensuring the ergonomic well-being of staff. Alongside these, 20 meeting rooms of varying capacities, equipped with Twist modular tables, streamline decision-making; whilst the multi-purpose auditorium, which can be divided into two separate rooms, can host everything from training sessions to large corporate events.
