Wao Coworking, feeling at home

Workspaces

Objective

The Wao Coworking space was launched in Alicante with the aim of creating a welcoming and homely atmosphere, to make coworkers feel at home. Interior designer María Andes was tasked with transforming dark, compartmentalised offices with 1960s-style wooden and glass partitions, located in a prime location in the heart of the city, into an open and bright environment. A coworking space without the excessive decorative flair and colour that characterises many such spaces, seeking above all to convey calm and relaxation.

"Decoration and interior design influence the way people relate to each other in the space, immersing coworkers in a pleasant, homely atmosphere that reduces stress and improves their well-being".

Solution

Having removed the partitions that divided the old offices and leaving only the structure, the WAO coworking space is now organised on a single floor divided into a large open space, spacious private offices located around four interior courtyards that allow natural light to enter, and several rooms – two for meetings, one for podcasts and another very versatile room for meetings and training. "When the layout works, it's very easy for the rest to work as well," explained María Andes, who stressed the importance of zoning and balancing areas, leaving areas of passage so that there is no friction between different uses.

From the entrance, where coworkers are welcomed by a large 3.6-metre-long reception desk and a hallway that serves as a reception area, all spaces, including the offices, are designed to be very spacious. Among them, and to break up the monotony, more private corners were created, with different atmospheres that encourage chatting and conversation. Some of them are equipped with programmes such as Noom, which also furnishes the main open space. The operational area features the Stay office chair and Vital PRO desks, while the training room features the Fluit multipurpose chair and the Talent 300 folding and stand up desk.

"I chose Actiu furniture because of its guarantee of ergonomics and repositionability, and because of its colour composition, which offered organic upholstery that matched the warm beige paintwork of the premises", added interior designer María Andes. A tan colour was chosen for the upholstery, not too light so that it can withstand dirt, and the darker colour is a fairly soft brown. In the large coworking room, the white tables reflect light and brightness, while oak is used in the offices. Biophilia is also present, through the landscaped courtyard at the entrance and artificial plants that integrate greenery into all spaces.
