Bioclimatic and interconnected Oriente Green Campus

Education

Target

The innovative, sustainable university campus Oriente Green, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and Saraiva + Associados to unify the campuses of the European University of Lisbon, needed to equip several of its spaces with furnishings in keeping with its philosophy. The architects wanted interior design, architecture and landscape to merge into a vibrant ecosystem that blurs the boundaries between work, learning and leisure, and it has already become the first Portuguese building to achieve both LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certification.

A benchmark in bioclimatic architecture, the Oriente Green Campus is committed to a more humane and sustainable urban transformation, which recovers the natural environment, promotes biodiversity and puts people at the centre.

Solution

The result of a painstaking urban redevelopment project that seeks to set an example for the city, the new campus transforms an abandoned commercial complex in the Moscavide district into an interconnected space. A vertical landscape, where the built blends with the natural, and the interiors extend outwards, in the form of terraces, courtyards or roof terraces, where to work, study or simply enjoy. Flexible and hybrid environments that invite workers and students to break with traditional models of relationships.

Actiu has participated in the project, together with DFK Office, by equipping staff areas for teachers and common spaces with some of its programmes, such as the Prisma, Vital Pro, Twist or Dorik tables; the Fluit and Urban chairs; or the Bend sofseating . Proposals aligned with the philosophy of the European University that help to create collaborative and changing environments, some of them with organic shapes and configurations, such as Bend, which refer to the natural environment, and others stackable and equipped with wheels to facilitate movement, such as Urban.

LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum, the building integrates high standards of sustainability, both active and passive, including natural ventilation, green roofs with native species, solar panels or intelligent systems to reduce consumption. In addition to a construction that reuses 90% of the materials of the original complex and considerably reduces the carbon footprint.
