Caring for health through design at CEMDOE

Objective

Founded by Mariela Vicini, CEMDOE is a Medical Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Specialties which seeks to improve the health and quality of life of its patients within the Integra health ecosystem. This project was entrusted to the American architecture studio Perkins+Will Miami, which together with the local team of Moré Arquitectos and Colectivo de Diseño, and with the architect Kathylka González, from 1:1 Arquitectura SRL, as well-being advisor, had to create a space in line with the values of a centre that is committed to 'integral health'.

Innovation is a key part of a project in which every area has been designed with patient experience, quality and safety in mind.

Solution

The architects have designed a building that revolves around patient well-being, with façades that alternate exposed concrete with glazed planes and allow natural light to reduce the demand for artificial lighting. Art also plays a key role in this space, with a large mural by Dominican artist Fernando Varela and a sculptural marble-clad staircase in the central atrium; as well as a mural painting by Nathalie Ramirez in the cafeteria.

Actiu has collaborated, together with its partner in the Dominican Republic, Modulor, in furnishing the centre with programmes such as Noom or Longo, which add warmth and a friendly touch to the spacious and luminous waiting areas. In the operational areas, the furniture changes according to the specific needs and character of each space: dynamic and changing in open spaces and training areas; and more sober and minimalist in the offices and meeting rooms.

In addition, and in order to preserve health and hygiene, all the furniture opts for antibacterial finishes and the sustainably produced linoleum or vinyl flooring was chosen in large formats for public areas to reduce the number of joints. Carefully chosen signage and colour-coded sectoring facilitate orientation, while the green tones chosen, in harmony with those of the plants that decorate some of the spaces, encourage patients to feel relaxed and in permanent contact with nature.

Discover Healthcare

Furniture for healthcare spaces should be oriented towards the functionality and comfort of patients and to achieve a workplace adapted to the needs of medical staff and professionals, as well as families, carers and companions, placing them at the centre of the healthcare activity.
