Hospital 12 de Octubre, innovation and humanisation

Health

Objective

In line with a firm commitment to its business and cultural transformation, the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid is moving to a new space by Argola Arquitectos. A project that has already received financial support from the European Union, in recognition of its strategy of digitalisation, humanisation, flexibility and sustainability, which aims to transform healthcare and offer a much more humanised service, to consolidate its position as a pioneer in the redefinition of healthcare in Europe.

Under the concept of 'Hospital de la Cultura', the 12 de Octubre becomes a model hospital in the experience it offers to patients and professionals.

Solution

The project by Argola Arquitectos expands and modernises the Hospital, both spatially and technologically, through responsible design and advanced equipment and facilities. Under the concept of 'Hospital de la Cultura', the 12 de Octubre incorporates a , which includes bright rooms, biophilic design, therapeutic terraces and a 24-hour open-door model, placing patients, families and professionals at the centre of care. Cultural and emotional elements, including music and artistic interventions, are part of a project that understands health as an integral concept, where the clinical and the emotional go hand in hand.

"After the pandemic, we understood that hospitals must be resilient and prepared for change. It is not just a matter of growing in space, but of every corner being able to care for and adapt to new healthcare realities," stresses the hospital's director, Carmen Martínez de Pancorbo y González.

Far from the cold and distant image of traditional hospitals, the new complex is committed to 'spaces that care', friendly, accessible and adaptable to every need, making hospitalisation a more human and closer experience. A transformation in which Actiu has taken part with ergonomic, modular and sustainable furniture, which contributes to creating environments that transmit confidence, serenity and closeness. Programmes such as Vital Pro, A+s Word, Noom, Avant, Smara, Talent, Twist, Longo and Bend provide the flexibility required in today's medicine and help to ensure that every corner can be adapted to different care needs without large investments.

"In this project our commitment has been to design furniture that helps to create spaces that care. We believe that healthcare innovation begins in the environments, which must transmit confidence and allow the flexibility demanded by today's medicine", says Soledat Berbegal, Actiu's Brand Director.

In line with Actiu's philosophy, sustainability plays a fundamental role, both through energy efficiency and the use of recyclable materials, as well as international certifications such as WELL Certification, which evaluates parameters such as natural light, acoustics, thermal comfort and air quality. All of these aspects have made the 12 de Octubre Hospital an international benchmark, not only for its transplants or paediatric robotic surgery, but also for the humanised design of its facilities.

At the heart of the new 12 de Octubre Hospital, the centre's director Carmen Martínez talks to Soledat Berbegal, director and brand reputation advisor at Actiu, about a healthcare model that puts people at the centre. They talk about transformation, innovation and a shared vision: humanisation as the driving force for change. Spaces that care, that accompany and that contribute to healing. A dialogue between two women who believe that health is also built from the environment.
